Common Types of Eye Surgery That You May Need Someday

Your eyes are one of the most important organs in your body. The eyes provide us with sight, one of the most important senses that helps us to navigate the world and make our way through the day. Supporting your eye health is one of the most important things you can do. And sometimes, that means getting eye surgery. There are many different types of eye surgeries out there that you may need to have done someday. Here are three of the most common types of eye surgeries.

Lasik Surgery

Lasik surgery is a form of laser eye correction surgery. Lasik surgery is a very safe and effective way to correct eyesight in those who need contact lenses or glasses. Lasik surgery involves a few pre surgery check ups to examine your eyes and determine a surgery plan, helping your surgeon decide exactly how much of your corneal tissue needs to be removed to correct your vision. When surgery finally comes, it will only last around thirty minutes. You will lay down in a chair, and your eyes will be numbed and help open with a speculum device. Then your doctor will place a small slit in your cornea, and then operate a laser to remove tissue from your cornea. After a few days of recovery, your eyesight should be perfect.

Cataract Surgery

Cataracts are a clouding of the lens of your eye. They appear as a milky white clouding over your pupil and iris that clouds or completely impedes vision. Cataracts can be a result of all sorts of things, age, diabetes, eye injury, over exposure to sunlight, or high blood pressure. But with surgery you can have cataracts removed. Cataract surgery involves the surgical removal of the cataract from your eye. After a few days of recovery you should have your vision restored. Inflammation of the eye is a common side effect of cataract surgery. While steroid drugs can prevent inflammation, you should be aware of the side effects. Make sure to discuss all your options with your doctor and make a decision that is right for you.

Corneal Transplant Surgery

A corneal transplant surgery is the replacement of part or all of your cornea with the cornea of a donor. Corneal transplant surgery can help people with corneal scarring, thinning corneas, eye disease, and corneal ulcers. A corneal transplant involves the removal of your original cornea and then replacing it with the donor cornea. The surgeon attaches the new cornea to your eye with stitches that are thinner than human hair. Corneal transplant surgery is a very invasive surgery, but it can solve some major eye issues.

Eye surgeries are fairly common procedures. As we age our eyesight naturally declines and we become more susceptible to eye related issues. But luckily, there are plenty of surgeries that can help retain eye health. Understanding these common types of eye surgery can help relieve any stress you may have over potential eye surgeries you may need some day.
