Sink Your Teeth Into It: The Importance of Practicing Proper Dental Hygiene

Taking care of your teeth has a host of benefits. From improving your confidence, reducing overall health problems and promoting a better quality of life, there are many reasons to practice good oral health habits. Here are three ways that you can practice good oral hygiene and ensure that you are taking the steps necessary to protect your teeth and gums.

Routine Cleanings

While few people particularly like going to the dentist, it is important that you get regular cleanings if you want to maintain good oral health. You should get your teeth cleaned every six months. The hygienist or dentist can reach areas below the gum line and remove hard tartar deposits that are impossible to remove at home. Your dentist can also take X-rays to ensure that you have no cavities or other potential issues. If going to the dentist is anxiety-provoking, talk to your dentist about oral conscious sedation or other methods that can help make the dentist less nerve-wracking.

Brushing and Flossing

The cornerstone of optimal oral health is proper brushing and flossing. Each time that you eat, bacteria and plaque begin to develop on your teeth. A consistent brushing and flossing routine will prevent serious problems while keeping your teeth healthy and strong. You should aim to brush at least twice per day. Ideally, this would happen after breakfast and before bedtime. Spend at least two to three minutes thoroughly cleaning your teeth each time that your brush. An interdental cleaner, like floss, will get all of those hard-to-reach places in your mouth. Also, you should be flossing at least once per day.

Watch What You Eat

A healthy diet is crucial to the overall health of your teeth and gums. Eating a balanced diet that is rich in protein, fruits, vegetables and whole grains will deliver the nutrients that you need to keep your gums and teeth healthy. Foods that are rich in calcium promote strong teeth. Without adequate amounts of calcium, you put yourself at risk for tooth decay and gum disease. Foods to eat only on special occasions include sticky candy or carbonated soft drinks. If you eat a sugary treat, be sure to make an effort to brush your teeth right away.

Taking the time to practice these good oral hygiene habits now will pay off big as you and your teeth age. Without the right attention to oral hygiene, your overall physical health and quality of life can be negatively affected.
