Allergies, however minor, can put a major hold on your life! Dealing with constant itchy eyes, running noses, and sore throats impedes even the most basic of tasks, but especially frustrates the more complex and important ones. Here are some major sources of those pesky allergies, and how to avoid them.
Outside
The symptoms of allergies occur when small particles from a variety of sources enter your body, usually through your nose and mouth. If you are allergic to those particles, your immune system automatically attacks them with antibodies that create an itchy, runny or sore feeling. Many of these commonly allergy-inducing particles or allergens come from outside, like pollens from plants, trees, and flowers. You can prevent exposure to these by keeping your windows and doors closed especially during elevated allergy seasons. Try taking antihistamines before doing yard work, and avoid tracking pollen back into your home by bathing and changing after coming inside after extended periods outdoors.
Your Home
Unfortunately, the walls of your home cannot protect you from all allergens. In fact, your walls can be a breeding ground for other allergens! Dust mites found in the average house dust can be allergens that get caught in fabric fibers or float in the air. One of the most common indoor allergens, however, is created in dark, damp spots of your home that you don’t pay attention to, like under and around sinks and plumbing, or inside attics and walls. Here, residual dampness develops into dangerous molds that release spores similarly to plants. These spores are often harmful and can cause severe allergies. You can prevent mold and mildew by getting to the source and waterproofing your foundation. This eliminates residual water from creating mold altogether.
Animals
As much as you adore your furry friends, that fur is a leading cause of allergies. Cat and dog dander carry small particles that humans often are allergic to! Pet owners should consider taking medications that help manage allergies around their pets, as well as groom them often. If you know you have an allergy but are still hoping to add a pet to your home, you can also consider choosing a hypoallergenic breed that won’t shed and has dander that is not released into the air in significant amounts!
